Mad Max: Fury Road dominates the Critics Choice Awards while Spotlight takes Best Picture

Last night, the Broadcast Film Critics Association (or BFCA) handed out their Critics Choice Awards for the 21st time. Though the night was fairly dominated by Mad Max: Fury Road, the evening’s top prize did go to Spotlight. I want to caution that this isn’t the sort of precursor that mirrors what Academy members are going to do, since there’s no overlap in membership between AMPAS and the BFCA, but it still is worth looking at. Why? Well, because the Critics Choice Awards potentially look to influence Oscar by setting up nominees as winners. If a voter is considering voting for someone and sees them up on the stage, it could be the final push needed. In that sense, this show definitely has some merit and is worthy of a bit of discussion, which is what we’ll be doing right now. With nine prizes, Mad Max: Fury Road led the winner totals by far. In fact, the only other films to have multiple wins were The Big Short (with three wins) The Revenant (two wins), Room (two wins), and Spotlight (three wins). It was a dominated night for Mad Max: Fury Road, highlighted by a Best Director win for George Miller. Spotlight had its big moment with he aforementioned Best Picture win, while other notable prizes included Leonardo DiCaprio winning Best Actor for The Revenant, Brie Larson winning Best Actress for Room, Sylvester Stallone winning Best Supporting Actor for Creed, and Alicia Vikander winning Best Supporting Actress for The Danish Girl. All future Academy Award winners? We’ll have to sit tight and see, but that wouldn’t be a shocking development (including Spotlight in Picture and Miller in Director, along with Spotlight in Original Screenplay and The Big Short in Adapted Screenplay). In the meantime, you can see all of the winners below… Here now are the full winners from the 21st annual Critics Choice Awards, including both film and television: FILM BEST PICTURE: Spotlight ACTOR: Leonardo DiCaprio – The Revenant ACTRESS: Brie Larson – Room DIRECTOR: George Miller – Mad Max: Fury Road COMEDY: The Big Short ACTOR IN A COMEDY: Christian Bale – The Big Short ACTRESS IN A COMEDY: Amy Schumer – Trainwreck SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Alicia Vikander – The Danish Girl SUPPORTING ACTOR: Sylvester Stallone – Creed ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY: Josh Singer and Tom McCarthy – Spotlight ADAPTED SCREENPLAY: Charles Randolph and Adam McKay – The Big Short ACTING ENSEMBLE: Spotlight YOUNG ACTOR/ACTRESS: Jacob Tremblay – Room SCI-FI/HORROR MOVIE: Ex Machina ACTION MOVIE: Mad Max: Fury Road ANIMATED [...]
